Tom Routley
Tom has over 25 years specializing in income taxes working both for and with Canadian and US multinational corporations. The first 10 of those were spent working for a large US multinational and for 2 of Canada’s largest multinationals in the high-tech and financial services sectors. Since then, his focus has been to develop and implement over US$4 billion in tax-efficient cross-border financing transactions for US and Canadian multinational clients of 2 of Canada’s “big 5” banks and a UK investment bank.
All of these cross-border financings have necessitated close working relationships with experts in the identification and mitigation of various treasury risks, especially foreign exchange and interest rate exposures. They have also required a full understanding of the bank and capital market financing alternatives available.
Over the years, Tom has played an active role in the following organizations and committees:
• Canadian Bankers Association Tax Committee
• Canadian Manufacturers’ Association Tax Committee
• Canadian Chamber of Commerce Tax Committee
• Canadian Tax Foundation (including presentation at Annual Conference)
• Revenue Canada Technical Liaison SR&ED Committee
• Tax Executives Institute (including chairing Corporate Tax Management Committee)
• Institute for Learning (Bank of Montreal) (developing and teaching basic US and Canadian corporate tax principles courses to bankers)
Tom has a B.A. Sc. From the University of Toronto, an Executive Management Program diploma from Penn State and is a Canadian Chartered Accountant.
